Le superbe yacht à voile de 50 mètres Better Place, d’un bleu Bugatti éclatant, est le plus grand sloop en fibre de carbone au monde et le premier à être classé RINA Green Star.
Conçu et développé par Wally, la marque leader en matière de yachts à voile et à moteur innovants et de pointe, Better Place a été construit dans les installations de WallyEurope en utilisant la technologie de construction en fibre de carbone la plus avancée.

« Better Place a introduit des concepts innovants pour les yachts de croisière autour du monde », poursuit Bassani, »comme des volumes généreux associés à un déplacement ultra léger, un système de propulsion diesel-électrique de pointe, un système simplifié de voile d’étai, une superstructure avec des fenêtres pleine hauteur, de vastes espaces de vie en plein air, un pavois surélevé, une suite propriétaire à l’arrière avec hublots et ouvertures sur quatre côtés et un accès direct à la Terrasse-sur-la-mer. »
Un yacht éco-responsable et performant
Lancé en 2012, Better Place est le premier yacht à voile jamais conçu pour répondre aux exigences environnementales de la classification RINA Green Star Design, réservée aux navires conçus, construits et exploités de manière à garantir un respect maximal de l’environnement.
Bien qu’il dispose de grands volumes, Better Place se distingue par son faible déplacement et sa facilité de navigation. Son déplacement mesuré est de seulement 250 tonnes, dont 88 tonnes pour la quille lestée (aileron et bulbe) et 11,5 tonnes pour l’ensemble du gréement (mât, bôme, haubans en PBO).
« Ce résultat reflète l’excellente qualité de construction de Wally, appliquée à toutes les étapes du processus, en utilisant les technologies composites les plus avancées « , confirme Luca Bassani.
Le rapport déplacement/surface de voile assure des performances élevées, même par vents faibles, en dessous de 10 nœuds. La quille relevable Wally, qui augmente le tirant d’eau de 4,6 à 6,5 mètres, améliore encore la performance de Better Place, qui bénéficie également du système Wally easy-sailing, conçu pour offrir un yacht à la fois rapide et facile à manœuvrer.
Grâce à une bôme enrouleuse, un foc auto-vireur, un Magic Trim pour l’écoute de grand-voile, un winch captif pour l’écoute de foc et des commandes à bouton-poussoir, Better Place est conçu pour une navigation simplifiée. De plus, un système innovant de voile d’étai, spécialement développé pour ce yacht, permet de hisser rapidement et facilement la voile depuis un coffre de 8,6 mètres de long situé sur le pont avant.
Ce méga yacht performant et facile à naviguer combine ses caractéristiques de grand croiseur avec des espaces de rangement généreux et des espaces de vie spacieux : plus de 300 m² à l’intérieur et 400 m² à l’extérieur.
Une propulsion diesel-électrique et une classification verte
Les caractéristiques environnementales uniques de Better Place vont encore plus loin que celles requises par la classification RINA Green Star. Il est le premier yacht à voile équipé de la dernière technologie de propulsion diesel-électrique, ce qui permet d’améliorer l’efficacité énergétique et de réduire la consommation, le bruit, les vibrations et l’entretien du système de propulsion.
Sa puissance de 705 kW est générée par trois groupes électrogènes, permettant de convertir certains services hydrauliques en systèmes électriques, comme l’enrouleur de voile d’étai et les dispositifs de tension des écoutes.
Évolution du design et du style
Développé selon les lignes de Tripp Design et doté d’intérieurs conçus par Wetzels Brown Partners, Better Place se distingue par un design extérieur et intérieur à la fois époustouflant et innovant, incomparable avec tout autre yacht similaire.
L’extérieur et l’intérieur suivent le concept Wally de fusion entre espaces de vie intérieurs et extérieurs. Introduit par Wally en 1998 avec le yacht « Tiketitan », ce concept a été constamment perfectionné, notamment avec l’ajout de superstructures vitrées et de puits de lumière sur le pont.
L’espace de vie principal de 86 m², comprenant la navigation, la salle à manger et le salon, est abrité sous une superstructure dotée de fenêtres pleine hauteur, offrant une sensation d’ouverture et de vie en plein air. Cette superstructure agit comme un cockpit abrité, renforçant l’interaction entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur.
Le pavois surélevé, introduit pour la première fois par Wally en 2006 avec « Esense », remplace les rambardes et filières traditionnelles, offrant une protection unique tout en préservant les lignes épurées de la coque.
À l’arrière, la suite propriétaire de 62 m² bénéficie d’une visibilité et d’une luminosité exceptionnelles. La lumière naturelle inonde la cabine grâce aux hublots latéraux, à la vitre teintée arrière et au puits de lumière au plafond. Cette suite dispose d’un accès direct à la Terrasse-sur-la-mer de 30 m², autre signature du concept Wally inside-outside.
Espaces extérieurs et intérieurs
Le pont principal est dégagé et fluide, sans interruptions inutiles. Le salon, la salle à manger et le poste de barre forment un espace ouvert et continu de 86 m² sous la superstructure.
Le salon panoramique peut accueillir 20 personnes et s’ouvre sur le pont arrière, offrant un autre espace lounge. Une table basse centrale peut être transformée en une table à manger pour huit convives. À l’avant, la salle à manger pour 10 personnes peut également être convertie en un espace lounge avec un grand canapé.
Le cockpit social avant, accessible directement depuis les espaces intérieurs, comprend des tables et des bains de soleil pouvant accueillir jusqu’à 20 personnes. Plus loin, le pont avant abrite un jacuzzi noir encastré et dissimulé lorsqu’il n’est pas utilisé, un cockpit caché pour les winches, deux grands garages pour annexes, des coffres à voiles et un puits d’ancre Wally escamotable.
Le sundeck de 100 m² est accessible par un escalier extérieur et un escalier intérieur ouvert, et comprend un espace de navigation, un salon, une salle à manger, des bains de soleil et un barbecue.
Une caractéristique innovante est le monte-plats ouvert reliant la cuisine, la salle à manger intérieure et le sundeck. Ce système en suspension fonctionne sur un rail vertical unique, optimisant l’espace.
Sur le flanc tribord, une porte de coque se déploie pour se transformer en plateforme de baignade et d’embarquement.
Les aménagements intérieurs combinent des finitions en carbone brillant et satiné, du chêne laqué blanc satiné, du cuir gris et des tissus assortis pour une atmosphère élégante et relaxante. L’éclairage LED à intensité variable permet d’ajuster l’ambiance à bord, tandis qu’une installation lumineuse traverse la coque, reliant visuellement les espaces.

the world’s largest sloop in carbon fiber and the first Green Star

l The stunning Bugatti blue coloured 50-meter sailing yacht Better Place, is the world’s largest sloop in carbon fiber and uniquely classified RINA Green Star. Conceived and developed by Wally, the leading brand of innovative state-of-the-art sail and power yachts, Better Place was built at WallyEurope facility using the most advanced carbon fiber construction technology. “With Better Place, once again Wally opened a new route in yacht design and innovation” enthusiastically says Luca Bassani Antivari, Wally Founder and President and head of the R&D “We succeeded in delivering an environmental friendly and breakthrough Wally 50m with aggressive and sleek lines of a true performance sailing yacht, rather than the motor sailer look typical of this class of yachts.”

Better Place, launched in 2012, is the first sailing yacht ever developed to comply with the environmental requirements of the RINA Green Star Design additional class notation, reserved to the ships which are designed, constructed and operated in such a way as to ensure maximum respect for the environment.
Big volumes yet light displacement and easy-sailing l The measured displacement of this mega sailer is only 250 tons, of which 88 of the ballast (fin and bulb keel) and 11.5 of the full rigging (mast, boom, PBO rigging).
“This result reflects Wally’s excellent building quality carried out throughout all the construction, using the latest advanced composite technology” confirms Luca Bassani.
The displacement and sail area ratio provides for very high performance also in light airs, under 10 knots of wind. And the Wally lifting keel, increasing the draft from 4.6 to 6.5 meters, further improves Better Place’s performance, that are associated with the proven Wally easy-sailing system to produce a true Fast and Easy mega yacht.
Along with the in-furling boom, self-tacking jib, Magic Trim for the main sheet, captive winch for the jib sheet , and push button controls, the Wally easy-sailing features of the Wally 50m include the new staysail system, specifically developed by the R&D for this mega yacht: the furling staysail with no-torsion luff cable is always ready to be easily and quickly hoisted from its 8.6-m long dedicated locker in the forward deck.
The fast and simplified mega yacht uniquely combines performance with all the world cruiser characteristics offering plenty of storage and large living areas exceeding 300 sqm inside and 400 sqm outside.
Diesel electric propulsion & Green classification
l The unique environmental characteristics of Better Place go even further than those required by the RINA Green Star Classification: she is the first sailing yacht equipped with the latest diesel electric propulsion technology, to increase power efficiency and reduce consumption, noise and vibration, as well as the ordinary maintenance of the propulsion system.
The 705kW power is produced by three generators, offering the opportunity to convert some hydraulic services into electrical ones thanks to the very powerful energy source, such as the inner stay furler, and the sheet tensioning devices.
Design and styling evolution
l Developed on the lines of Tripp Design with the interiors by Wetzels Brown Partners, the overall design, interior and exterior, is astonishing and innovative compared to any other similar yacht.
The exterior and interiors are developed following the Wally concept of inside-outside living areas, whereas the interiors open onto the exteriors and vice versa. Introduced in yacht design by Wally in 1998 with the sailing cruiser Tiketitan, this concept has been constantly developed by the Monegasque brand pioneering also the glass deckhouses and the deck skylights.
The deckhouse encloses the 86-sqm open space with navigation, dining and lounge areas, and is characterised by full height windows giving the open-air feeling, a sort of sheltered cockpit enhancing the inside-outside living.
The genuinely Wally raised bulwark, firstly featured by Esense in 2006, offers unique protection
and replaces the less safe and aesthetically appealing rail and stanchions, while leaving the hull
lines pure.
The 62-sqm owners’ suite is aft with extraordinary visibility and brightness. The natural light
floods in from four sides of the vast stateroom: through the portholes on both sides, and the
mirrored glass aft and above. The owners’ private area has direct access to the 30-sqm Terraceon-
the-sea, that is another distinctive feature of the Wally inside-outside concept.
On deck and inside
l The main deck is open and free of unnecessary interruptions, the saloon, dining room and wheelhouse forming one continuous, 86 sqm open space under the deckhouse.The saloon with panoramic views seats 20 people as lounge opening onto the aft deck with further lounge space. There is an option for the central coffee table to be converted into an additional dining for eight people. The dining area forward seats 10 people in dining layout and can be converted into an additional lounge area with XL sofa seating six comfortably .
The forward social cockpit, directly accessible from the interior dining and lounge areas, features table seats and sun beds for up to 20-people. Beyond this, the forward deck features a Jacuzzi, finished in black, which is positioned beneath deck level and is therefore invisible when not in use, an hidden winch “cockpit” for the halyards, two large tender garages, stay-sail locker, sail lockers, and the Wally submarine anchor locker.
The 100-sqm sundeck is accessed both by an outside staircase and by an inside open staircase, leading to steering and navigation, lounge, dining, sunbathing and barbeque areas.
A particularly innovative service feature is the open food lift connecting galley, interior dining area and sundeck– a ‘suitcase’ suspended in free space, connected by a single vertical track, to lift . The sundeck dining can be converted into a huge sunbed with the addition of an inflatable mattress, providing further comfort without stretching available storage capacity.
A hull side door is located amidships to starboard: when open, it converts into a swimming and tender boarding platform.
Maximising space and minimising storage requirements, a newly designed seating module has been developed for the deck in carbon and mesh with low profile cushions, for easy stowage, by
the interior designers Wetzels Brown Partners, who designed all the deck furnishing.
The lower deck features the night and service areas accommodating the owners in the aft suite
and up to ten guests in four double staterooms, and ten crew in five double cabins. All cabins have en-suites. The crew and service quarter is forward with galley, laundry and crew mess.The two engine rooms are amidships.The interior design combines carbon look both gloss and satin, satin white lacquered oak, grey leather and colour matched upholstery to create a relaxed feeling. Colour-changing LED lights are used throughout the yacht and can be adjusted in order to change the atmosphere, reflecting the interior design concept to have soft and neutral tones that are coloured by the lights. The cabins are linked by a light installation, running along the spine of the yacht.
